As Melly walked down to breakfast the following morning careful use of cosmetics had hidden most of the evidence of a sleepless night and, on the surface at least, she appeared businesslike and composed. She was early, she had planned to be. She fully intended to be sitting enjoying breakfast without a care in the world when Logan made his appearance in the hotel dining-room.

He arrived just a minute or two after her and joined her at the otherwise empty table with a tight nod. ‘I knocked on your door a moment ago but when there was no answer I assumed you were here.’

‘Did you?’ She raised veiled eyes to meet his gaze. She had seen him as he had walked in and dropped her eyes immediately, but not before a hard physical jolt had ricocheted through her chest with dreadful suddenness.

‘I wanted to apologise for last night’s fiasco,’ he continued grimly. ‘I have never lost my temper with a woman before and my behaviour was inexcusable.’

‘Oh…’ The unexpectedness and obvious genuineness of the apology left her floundering for words. She had spent most of the night doing endless post-mortems on every word spoken and unspoken between them since he had entered the room and in the cold early hours had been forced to admit that the blame was not solely on his shoulders. In setting up Paul as a defence against his supposed seduction she had probably made a difficult situation ten times worse, but that didn’t excuse either his aggressive hostility where Paul was concerned or his bitingly cold mockery.

‘Are you prepared to accept my apology, Melly, or would you like me to put things right with Giles and allow you to leave without any danger to your job?’ he asked, still in the same tight strained voice.

She looked at him levelly over the vase of fresh flowers on the white linen tablecloth. ‘And what exactly would you say, Logan?’ she asked flatly. ‘Nothing that could be helpful to either of our careers and certainly not to my reputation. I don’t think Giles is the type of man to appreciate personal difficulties getting in the way of a project of his, do you?’

‘Possibly not.’ He gestured irritably as he ran a hand through his wiry black hair. ‘But I’d deal with Giles in my own way.’

‘I accept your apology.’ She crumbled the end of a croissant between her fingers as she spoke, her eyes downwards. ‘I’m here to do a job and I’ve never yet walked out on anything I’ve committed myself to. I’d prefer to forget last night.’ Her heart was thudding a loud tattoo but, amazingly, the trembling that was affecting her body was not reflected in her voice and there was dead silence at the table for a long heart-stoppingly tense moment.

‘Thank you.’ His voice was icy, polite and distant. ‘I give you my word I won’t force myself on you again.’

The arrival of the others through the doorway of the dining-room effectively finished further
